People don’t buy what you do, but why you do it. - Simon Sinek
I’m going to borrow some credibility from one of the best organizational consultant and business authors of our time, Simon Sinek, for this post.
You may remember Simon from a speech he made about Millenials and why they don’t succeed that went viral way back when. If you have 15 minutes to spare and you want a great outlook on life, it's a great watch, check it out here.
So why am I bringing up the quote title? Simple. Businesses that start without a purpose are doomed to fail.
So that begs the next question, what purpose are you trying to fill? Why are you doing what you’re doing?
Well, that’s not really for me to answer, I have no idea what you’re doing right now or where you’d like to end up, but I’ll ask you, the reader, a question that I usually ask my coworkers, “What is a major life goal of yours, and what steps have you taken today to get closer to that goal?”
Whoa. That’s deep, right?
What usually ends up happening is a couple of things. First, I get to know my co-worker a little better in just a couple minutes worth of engaging 1-on-1 conversation than most people do working side by side in a year. Second, their major life goal is almost always some distant far off pie-in-the-sky island that seems (usually) unattainable in a single bound. And that’s a good thing.
I love to travel. And just like traveling to that far-off island, there’s usually some kind of connecting flight that you would need to take to get there. The further the island, the more layovers and transfers you’d need to make, and the more rewarding it is to finally arrive. This is my analogy of breaking down goals into smaller, more manageable chunks. Otherwise known as baby steps. Hence, the part of my question that asks, what steps have you taken today?
But what really happened here? Well, in the first part, I made a connection. It was a personal connection, with a real human being! Something that Simon touches on in that video link above. Also, something that is becoming increasingly rare in our day and age of infinite internet and endless distractions!
Second, I’m helping inspire someone to actually try and realize their dreams, whatever it may be (he said smugly while patting himself on the back.)
But what does this have to do with the title?
